Media in India

The country consumed 99 million newspaper copies as of 2007—making it the second largest market in the world for newspapers.[4] By 2009, India had a total of 81,000,000 Internet users—comprising 7.0% of the country's population,[5] and 7,570,000 people in India also had access to broadband Internet as of 2010— making it the 11th largest country in the world in terms of broadband Internet users.[6] As of 2009, India is among the 4th largest television broadcast stations in the world with nearly 1,400 stations.[7]
Newspaper sale in the country increased by 11.22% in 2007.[4] By 2007, 62 of the world's best selling newspaper dailies were published in China, Japan, and India.[
Following the economic reforms satellite television channels from around the world—including BBC, CNN, CNBC, PTV, and other foreign television channels gained a foothold in the country
43% of the Hindus speak Hindi while the rest speak Bangla, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Assamese and other languages. Almost 45% of the Muslims speak Urdu while the rest speak Bangla, Hindi, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Assamese and other languages. About one-third of the Christians speak Malayalam, one-sixth speak Tamil while the rest speak a variety of languages. In total, there are 1,652 languages and dialects spoken in India.[21]

Media Market: The total size of the media sector in 2006 was ~$10B which is expected to grow at a CAGR of ~18% over the next 5 years. This puts India among the fastest growing media markets in the world, as shown in the chart below.
Television and Print: TV and Print are the two largest sectors in Indian Media with $4.25B and $3B in revenues respectively. Additionally, TV is expected to grow at a CurrentAdditionalGrowthRate of 26% over the next 5 years.

TV accounted for ~43% of the total media market in 2005, a share that is expected to grow to 55% by 2010.

Cable and Satellite (C&S) Penetration: India is the third largest Television market (in terms of number of TV households) in the world after the United States and China. The Indian C&S TV market is the fastest growing in Asia. Additionally, 98% of the 62M C&S HH are on an Analog platform, a scenario that is expected to change dramatically with the advent of Satellite Direct To Home (DTH) and digital cable over the next 5 years.

In India the web is now established as a mass market media channel for the wealthy.
